Owners Jay Scherger and his wife Kristi bought the 243 acres 17 miles west of Walla Walla in 1999, with the express purpose of nestling a golf course in the rolling hills. "I've been wanting to do this in the back of my head since I was 14 years old," Jay said. "I've always thought, "What a life, to build and operate a little golf course." And now Kristi is wrapped up in my insanity! And what a way for Macyn to grow up!" Macyn is their 5 year old daughter.
After searching the eastern part of Washington State for just the right spot, the couple found the farm on Touchet North Road that met their criteria. It also happened to be right down the road from where the couple once went pheasant hunting together while they were dating.
"We've always wanted to live in a place like this," Jay says of the land, which had been dairy as well as a wheat and pea farm. But the land isn't the best for growing crops. Former owners failed to make a go of wheat and pea rotations prior to the Scherger's purchase of the property. "Geographically, the ground is not the best for farming, but it's fantastic ground for a golf course," Jay says. The Schergers kept the natural characteristics of the land in mind when dressing the course. "We tried to use as many of the features as possible," Kristi said. That includes the water hazards down the left side of the first hole which happens to be a irrigation ditch and the fourth hole which happens to have the Touchet river run along side it, elevated tees on several holes, and playing through canyons on the last few holes. The course takes up about 40 acres of the farm but plans are to expand to 18 holes in the future.
